Vasco SC pick 1st point; Calangute move closer to Sporting

DULER: Vasco Sports Club mustered their first point in the Goa Football Association (GFA) Professional League and moved from the bottom of the table to the second last slot after sharing two goals with calangute association at Duler stadium, Mapusa on Saturday.

Calangute Association are now equal on points with Sporting Clube de Goa (seven) but the latter are second with a better goal average. Dempo Sc club top the table with nine points from an unbeaten three game run.

Vasco coach Eban Mesquita started  with four changes – Myran Pereira, Stephen Colaco, Leny Fernandes and Deryl Endro being given a starting break , while Calangute Association coach Alex Alvares made two changes – bringing in Sanjay Vegurlekar and Rohan Pednekar.

Vasco Sports Club took the few people gathered by surprise with a goal in the fourth minute of the game. Clive Coelho sent a curling corner to his teammate Schubert Pereira who’s fierce out foot shot hit the side post and entered the goal, 1-0.

The early goal surprised the Calangute lads who stepped up the pressure on the lads from Vasco and the intent of an equalizer was clear


First, Joston Pereira blistering shot from top of the penalty box was pushed for a corner by a diving save by keeper Vasco goalkeeper Suresh Lamani. However, the Calangute lads did not have to wait for too longs as the equaliser was scored after around fifteen  minutes after having conceded the goal.

In the 23rd minute, a corner by Domnic Fernandes saw the ball travel to Joston who headed the ball to Josley Dias who headed the ball into the back of the nylons for the equaliser to send glee to the Calngute fans,1-1.

Three minutes later Calangute should have further increased their lead when a direct free kick from Joston was pushed to safety by Vasco keeper Suresh.

Vasco keeper Suresh was back in action when a deadly cross by Dominic saw the entire Vasco defense beaten only for the keeper push the ball over the goal line.

Vasco SC nearly conceded towards the close of the first session. However, Vasco defender Godfrey Mascarenhas made a breath taking last minute clearance to deny Calangute’s Sanjay Vegurlekar from scoring.

On crossing over, the match was fought on an attacking note but it was some fine performance from the goalkeepers and defenders that enabled the teams share goals and points.
