Thousands rally in city to seek justice for rape victims
PANAJI/ SALIGAO: Thousands took part in the peaceful candlelight march held from Miramar to Azad Maidan in city on Sunday to protest against the rape cases reported in the country.
The march started at the Miramar circle at around 7 pm and protesters reached Azad Maidan with speakers stating that the main purpose was to raise awareness amongst the people about the cruelty inflicted on the minor girl who was gang raped and murdered in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir and to demand justice. They said that they were walking for justice and humanity.
The participants included social activists, writers, advocates, journalists and large number of common men and others who came out in large numbers and joined the silent peaceful march against rapists and demanded justice to all the rape victims including in Kathua in Kashmir, Unnao in Uttar Pradesh and Surat in Gujarat.
Protestors were carrying placards reading ‘Justice to Kathua, Surat and Unnao rape victims’, ‘Justice to Asifa’ and ‘There is a rape epidemic in India, what are we doing’, ‘No means no rape’ and ‘Stop rapes now’ etc.
They said that rallies are taken out throughout the country demanding justice for rape victims and to protect women and save their dignity.
Meanwhile A candlelight march was held from the Saligao panchayat to Calangute church to protest against the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir.
A large crowd staged a morcha which was supported by the Calangute church. The vigil started in front of the Saligao panchayat at 7 pm and converged at the Calangute church. Speaking to media persons, assistant parish priest of Calangute Fr Marcilino said, “We are living in a democratic country and the guilty needs to be punished.”
Ryan said, “When you walk along today with your neighbours or friends as one for justice you’ll know your strength if ever bad times come and people have to take to the streets to support you.”
The people of Calangute parked their vehicles near the Calangute church and took a bus to travel to Saligao where the candlelight march started.
