Salgaocar FC inflict defeat on Dempo SC
UTORDA: Salgaocar FC consolidated their position at the top of the Goa Zone league table of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) U-18 Youth League by registering a 3-1 win against Dempo Sports Club at SAG grounds, Utorda on Saturday.
Attacking medio Chaitan Komarpant scored a brace for Salgaocar FC in either sessions of play (15th and 67th minute) while the other goal for the team was scored by Valentinho Nazareth with a long range 30 yard shot (34th minute).
Dempo Sports Club, who played a great game in the second session, could pull only a goal back through play-maker Aaron S Alvares (79th) minute, though the medio did all he could, dazzling all the while with nice play, but was unable to dent the Salgaocar goal despite his best efforts.
While Salgacoar FC had a major say in the first half proceedings, the second session was more absorbing with Dempo Sports Club having the major chunk of play in their favour. Somehow, the team could not finish.
Salgaocar F C took the lead when medio Steflon D’Costa snatched the ball from a Dempo S C player and sent a long ball from the left to Chaitan on the top of the Dempo box, from where the last named trapped the ball well, controlled it and then sent a carpet drive to bewilder Dempo S C keeper Wellyster Mendes.
Three minutes later, Chaitan’s blistering left footer kissed the horizontal and the ball moved out giving a real scare to the Dempo SC keeper.
Dempo SC could have equalised early when Aaron Alvares let go a left footer which the Salgacoar FC keeper Utkarsh Deshmukh responded with a smart save. Very soon in the 18th minute, the tall and burly built Dempo striker Kimran Fernandes had a chance, but he shot over the bar from close.
Salgaocar FC continued mounting pressure and made the score 2-0 in their favour nine minute before going for the lemon break when, unexpectedly, medio Valentinho Nazareth unleashed a long shot that crashed into the Dempo SC nets as keeper Wellyster failed to read the flight of the ball .
Dempo SC looked a transformed team into the second session and did everything right except getting the needed goals to level the score and could only pull a goal back, though they had quite a number of opportunites to score.
Salgacoar FC’s Chaitan began to trouble the Dempo SC defense and on one such occasion, Dempo SC defender Nikhil Gurung, who had a great game, accidentally handled the ball, with the referee pointing to the dreaded spot from where Chaitan made no mistake.
The last fifteen minutes of play saw Dempo SC in complete command of the match but they could pull only a goal back through debonair medio Aaron Alvares whose knee hight shot gave no chance at all to the Salgacoar FC keeper.
