Parsekar asks voters to defeat Sopte
PANAJI: Senior BJP leader and former chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar, who has been antagonised by his party’s move to give ticket to his archrival Dayanand Sopte for the Mandrem bye-poll, on Sunday said the BJP could give ticket to anybody but it is the voters who will decide the fate of candidates.
Speaking at a largely attended meeting held at Mandrem under the banner of ‘Bharatiya Janata Party Nishtavant Karyakartas’, Parsekar said, “Now, it is the turn of Pednekars to show former Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte his place by defeating him in the by-poll. Sopte has cheated the people of Mandrem… He has been switching the loyalty frequently. First, Sopte had been elected as the BJP MLA of Pernem constituency. He resigned before the term could end and joined the Congress. Sopte was elected as the Mandrem MLA on Congress ticket in the 2017 assembly elections. However, he resigned within one and a half year and joined the BJP. Voters of the Mandrem constituency will not vote such person who has been shifting loyalties.”
Parsekar claimed that as an MLA, a minister and the chief minister he brought about developmental works in Pernem taluka in general and Mandrem constituency in particular.
Going hammer and tongs at Sopte, the former chief minister said that Sopte does not know what development is, and hence he should eschew speaking on it.
“Sopte has no support of BJP karyakartas in Mandrem, as they have always stood by me. They are still with me and the presence of such a crowd at today’s meet says it all,” he reckoned.
The meeting, which was held in a hall, was attended by at least 1500 people. The venue had a banner displaying images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Parsekar himself.
Stating that he had high regards for North Goa MP Shripad Naik, Parsekar said, “However, his recent statement confirming Sopte as the BJP candidate for the Mandrem by-poll has hurt me. I have all these years worked for Shripad during the Lok Sabha elections to garner votes for him… he has been getting a significant number of votes in Pernem taluka because of our efforts.”
Speaking on the occasion, Harmal ZP Arun Bandkar said that Parsekar has worked for the BJP in Goa for several years, and that the man who brought the BJP in the Pernem taluka is Parsekar.
