Non-muster roll female line helpers to undergo physical test for lineman post
Power Minister Nilesh Cabral on Wednesday said that the non-muster roll (NMR) female staff members who are working as line helpers in the state electricity department will have to pass a physical test for promotion to the post of lineman.
“If the ladies are able to climb the poles of nine metres and pass the test then they will be appointed for the job of lineman. We cannot take them for the duty of lineman and make them do office work in the department. Digging holes and putting up poles are part of the work of a lineman that one should be able to do,” said Cabral while replying during the question hour.
Cabral said that a file related to regularisation of the services of 29 contractual staff of the department has gone missing since the year 2005-06, when Margao MLA Digambar Kamat was the power minister.
“Seven staff members were left out while rest were regularised by the government. The reason is not known as to why the services of the seven of them were not regularised. The file is missing; I will call Digambar Kamat for help in tracing the file and if we do not succeed in locating the file then I will file an FIR,” he said. Kamat responded and said that he was not aware of the particular missing file. He went on to add that Cabral should know that a minister does not recruit anybody and that it is the department officials who do all the process of recruitment.
As per the reply of the government to Velim MLA Filip Neri Rodrigues, there are 1,015 workers engaged on daily /contract basis in the electricity department since 2011 and till date 586 workers were regularised in service by the government.
The opposition MLAs joined together to ask the power minister to regularise the services of the staff working on daily /contract basis at the earliest.
