NGOs, locals raise voice against cutting of fruit-bearing trees at Colvale
Various NGOs along with locals on Wednesday gathered at Amvani, Colvale to raise their voice to save six mango trees which are likely to be axed by a highway contractor while undertaking the construction of a flyover. The protestors are to meet PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Thursday to discuss the issue.
An alert citizen noticed that the highway contractor was planning to cut the six fruit bearing trees along the national highway and immediately raised an alarm.
On Wednesday evening while people gathered to protect the trees, some locals argued that if the trees are not cut then their land will be acquired and will result in loss of their business.
Meanwhile the Colvale panchayat is supposed to pass a resolution within a fortnight on protecting the trees.
Sarpanch Nityanand Kandolkar said that the mango trees are there since the Portuguese era and people travelling towards Mapusa used to take rest under the shady trees. He said that the mango trees are the identity of Colvale village and needs to be protected at all costs.
