House remembers Parrikar, Francis, Wagh

The state legislative assembly on Wednesday paid rich tributes to the departed former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, former deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza and former deputy speaker Vishnu Surya Wagh, who have passed away recently.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that Parrikar was a leader of the masses, adding it is due to Parrikar that he came into politics and went on to become MLA, Speaker and today the Chief Minister of the state.

“I appeal to my colleagues and also the members of the Opposition, who are also my colleagues to extend their support and help us take forward the work done by our beloved leader (Parrikar),” Sawant said.

The Chief Minister also remembered and acknowledged the contribution of Francis D’Souza and Vishnu Surya Wagh.

“His (Parrikar’s) contribution as MLA, Leader of Opposition and the chief minister in the assembly will never be forgotten,” said Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar who moved the condolence motion before the House.

Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, speaking on behalf of all Congress MLAs, said that Parrikar’s presence in the Assembly will be missed by the legislators.

“I often watch Parrikar’s videos from archives in the Assembly to learn as to how he used to raise the issues especially his speech on the different bills while he was the leader of the opposition,” said Kavlekar.

Minister Vijai Sardesai said that with Parrikar’s death an era has come to an end, adding Parrikar was a man who believed in inclusive development taking together all the communities in the state.

“Francis D’Souza was a people’s politician and a dear friend. Vishnu Wagh was one of the finest orators in the state and both these personalities will be missed by Goans,” he said.

Minister Govind Gaude praised Parrikar for improving the standard of education in the state and improving the standard of living of Goans.

“Wagh was the voice of the Bahujan Samaj and he also always fought for the working class,” he said.

Minister Mauvin Godinho said that he joined BJP due to Parrikar as he was like the former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi.

He said that Vishnu Wagh will always be remembered for his immense contribution to the field of politics, literature, and art.

“Francis D’Souza was a simple man with high thinking…he had guts to join a party which was labeled as a communal party by many,” Godinho said.

IT Minister Rohan Khaunte said that Parrikar will be remembered as the father of modern Goa, adding during his tenure as MLA he learnt a lot from the former chief minister.

Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao said that it will be difficult for the BJP to produce a leader like Parrikar. Alemao, who is the lone NCP MLA, raised doubts whether any of the current ministers in the BJP-led government has a command like Parrikar used to have.
