Goan woman among 13 dead in Karwar boat tragedy
A woman from Ponda was among the dead in the Karwar boat tragedy as the death toll touches 13. The navy fished out five more bodies while six where reported missing.
A police official from Sadashivgad police station informed that a person from Goa was among the deceased and has been identified as Rajani Talekar (48) a resident of Prabhunagar, Ponda. The deceased was identified after the navy fished out five more bodies 24 hours after the mishap.
The navy continued its rescue operations till late night on Tuesday in a bid to trace the six missing pilgrims while the chances of their survival look bleak after a boat carrying 34 pilgrims capsized off the coast of Kudumgad Island.
According to official sources, 6 people are still missing as per reports filed by the families with the Karwar taluka authorities. So far 15 people were rescued by local fishermen before help from Coast Guard and marine police arrived while four people were rescued by the navy.
The boat which capsized on Monday afternoon was ferrying 34 pilgrims from the Kudumgad Island after performing religious rituals at the Narshimha utsav and included one helmsman and 3 assistant.
