Fine piece of bowling by new-ball pair of Krishna Das and Lakshay Garg and equally impressive show by spinners Amogh Desai and Darshan Misal helped Goa restrict Odisha to a moderate 229 for 7 on the opening day of the Elite, Group C, Round 9, Ranji Trophy match at Bhubaneswar on Monday.

Put into bat, hosts Odisha lost opener Anurag Sarangi for just 2 after he was cleaned up by Krishna Das in the ninth over. Next batsman Debashish Samantray added 11 before he was dismissed by Lakshay Garg. Odisha captain Subhransu Senapati too couldn’t stall the flurry of wickets with Goa’s bowlers displaying a good show. He fell to Das, who picked up his second wicket, for 4 runs.

Pattanaik and Shantanu Mishra then steadied the innings with a brilliant 117-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Pattanaik, playing in his 17th match, brought up his century off 194 deliveries which included 10 boundaries and one six, but was dismissed by Garg after reaching his ton. Mishra, who scored 59 off 183 balls, with the help of six fours, fell to Amogh Desai.

None of the Odisha batsmen registered any significant contributions with Suryakant Pradhan and Abhishek Raut batting on 21 and 13 respectively when stumps were drawn.

Brief scores: Odisha 229/7 (Sandeep Pattanaik 100, Shantanu Mishra 59) versus Goa.
