Goa overcome SAI; keep qualification hopes alive
Goa beat Sports Authority of India (SAI) 2-1 in the Junior National Football Championship for Dr B C Roy Trophy and kept their hopes alive of qualifying for the semifinals.
Goa is grouped with Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and SAI and the top team qualifies for the semifinals.
Goa drew their first match with Jammu and Kashmir 1-1 and face Punjab on Tuesday to decide the winner of the group.
Needing a win to stay in contention, Goa fell in arrears when the game was 25 minutes old. SAI went for the lemon break leading by a goal.
Goa came strongly in the second session and equalised within ten minutes through the combination of Kennath Da Costa and Shadel Fernandes — both of whom were instrumental for Goa’s equaliser against Jammu and Kashmir. Goa took the lead in the 38th minute of the second session through Stewart D’mello.
Goa and Punjab have the same number of points (four) but the lads from the North have a better goal average then Goa.
