SAG moots need based marks for sportspeople

PORVORIM: The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) in its AGM meeting held on Friday passed a resolution that the government should grant sports merit marks to sports people in case they need admission to professional colleges or where Marks are needed to clear a particular paper. Previously, the sports merit marks were added to the marks of sportspeople total marks. The Director of the Directorate of Education who is Chairman of the Goa Board attended the AGM of SAG and helped  during the deliberations. The SAG AGM also ratified the proposal of the Goa Government to host the National Games in Goa in November.

Cuncolim Union enter semis

NAVELI: Cuncolim Union entered the semifinals of Jose Bento Furtado memorial football tournament defeating Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 6-5 via tie-breaker, at Rosary grounds, Navelim on Saturday. The teams played a 1-1 draw in the regulation time. Cavelossim scored through Valencio Fernandes while Cuncolim netted through Frazer Fernandes. In the tie-breaker, Cuncolim Union scored through Krishna Shirodkar, Edney Fernandes, Paxton Colaco, Bharat Gaoncar and Nilesh Velip. For SCC Cavelossim Alex Rodrigues, Jayson Estibeiro, Alan Fernandes and Adulburgh D’Silva were on target.

Nandhini, Ameya in joint lead

MARDOL: Goa’s Nandhini Saripalli and Ameya with 5 points each, are in joint lead with three others — Sanjay Sindhia (Karnataka), Swaraj Palit (Jharkand) and Saurabh Kulkarni (Maharashtra) at the end of Round 5 in the 4th Desai Pratishthan’s Late Shri Laxmikant V Desai Memorial All India Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament, organised by Ponda Taluka Chess Association, at VPK Grampanchayat hall, Mardol. Other Goans Snehal Bhosale, Shalon Pais, Nirav Rajasuba, Girish Bachikar,  Anirudh Parsekar and Gajanan D are in joint-second place with 4.5 points each.

Chess coaching camp held in Bicholim

BICHOLIM: A total of 70 students participated in the 6-day chess coaching camp, organised by Lions Club of Bicholim, which concluded at Hirabai Zantye memorial hall on Saturday. SAG coaches Avinash Malvankar and Nilesh Dhargalkar guided the students.

Bardez Veterans seal semifinal spot

SANGOLDA: Bardez Veterans stormed into the semifinals of the Monte de Guirim Platinum Jubilee Veterans football tournament as they thrashed Ponda Veterans 7-0 in the quarterfinals played at Sangolda panchayat grounds, on Saturday. After medio Alexander Fernandes opened the scoring account for Bardez in the 12th minute, Pascoal Pereira, Bruno Coutinho, Alwyn DSouza scored goal apiece to swell to the lead to 5-0. Alexander then completed his brace to make it 6-0 before Ralf Fernandes converted a penalty to give Bardez a facile 7-0 win. Alexander was awarded the man of the match.

Boxer Santosh Harijan assures Goa a medal

PANAJI: Goa’s Santosh Harijan guaranteed a medal for the state as he beat Mizoram’s Zonuntluamaga and entered the semifinals of the 2nd Elite Men’s Boxing Nationals being held in Visakhapatnam. In the semis, Santosh will face Sikkim’s Suraj Rai.
