FC Goa steal march over Dempo SC
It’s not always that the team that plays better wins. At times, the team that capitalises on scoring chances takes full points. This is exactly what happened at SAG grounds, Utorda where F C Goa registered a 2-0 win against Dempo Sports Club in the All India football Federation (AIFF) U-18 (Goa Zone) Youth League on Thursday.
F C Goa who had little possession managed to deprive the well knit and robust Dempo Sports Club with the two chances they had in either sessions of play . They scored through striker Meuton Fernandes (19th minute) and Sweden Fernandes (88th minute).
F C Goa who had the ball for the first five minutes of play tried to enter the Dempo S C box, where they met with stiff resistance from the Dempo defenders and then the match began to tilt in favour of Dempo S C who had three clear chances in the first half, but striker Kimran Fernandes was unable to score from the six yard box to beat the F C Goa keeper Manav Baraskar, either hitting the ball wide or heading over the bar.
F C Goa created a scoring chance, against the run of play, with a counter move which culminated into a goal as striker Meuton Fernandes –who was left unmarked– scored from a cross by medio Brison Fernandes .
Though Dempo S C keeper Wellyster, had a good day under the bar, he was unable to prevent the ball from entering the nets.
Dempo S C continued playing well, creating some smart scoring chances, but a goal eluded them.
The second session saw Dempo S C impress again but every time they went in search of the equaliser, their strikers and the attacking medios could not shoot in goal.
Dempo S C defender Rajat Harijan had a superb match as he excelled with his fine touches and brilliant overlapping ,creating tremendous pressure against the F C Goa rearguard which survived some anxious moments .
The match almost went out of control of referee Sharad Mahesh Naik as the players of both the sides got physical, pushing and even exchanging fisticuffs in the 65th minute. The referee showed the yellow card to a Dempo player but ignored the offence of F C Goa coach Gavin Elias Araujo- who entered the field of play during the skirmish and even later on.
Referee Sharad Naik had to flash red cards to Dempo S C’s Deepraj Govekar and F C Goa’s Aniket Singh Thakur for exchanging blows. This happened in the last few minutes of play.
Dempo S C then lost concentration and F C Goa scored their second goal through Sweden Fernandes, who connected a cross from the left flank.
With this win, F C Goa has collected eleven points from six matches while Dempo S C remains on six points from six matches.
