DY Patil upset Goan Lions to win GCL
PORVORIM: Goan Lions, who had stormed into the summit clash without conceding a single defeat, failed to bring their best game in the all-important final as they let DY Patil run away with the Goa Corporate League (GCL) trophy after conceding a five-wicket defeat, at GCA Academy ground in Porvorim on Sunday evening.
Put in to bat after losing the toss, Goan Lions had a dismal start to their innings as captain Amogh Desai (9) departed cheaply in the very second over. Next man Vaibhav Govekar looked in good touch hitting two fours and one six in the first four balls that he faced. But much to the dismay of his teammates and supporters, he could not continue his onslaught for long and departed for 14. With team’s score reading 24 for 2 in third over, Amit Verma joined Veer Yadav, who was holding one end but without making much difference to the scoring. But in the company of Amit, he too played freely as he began growing in confidence. The duo took the total to 89 when, in the 10th over, their 65-run partnership for the third wicket was broken as Veer Yadav walked back after making run-a-ball 25. Veer’s dismissal somewhat triggered a collapse in Goan Lions’ innings as they kept losing wickets at regular interval and could post only 154. Defending the modest total, Darshan Misal gave early breakthrough to Goa Lions as he removed DY Patil’s opener Prabhsimran Singh for just 4 runs. The hard-hitting opener had hit a match-winning knock of 70 runs in the first semifinal played on Saturday.
However that proved to be the only high point for Goan Lions, as the remaining DY Patil batsmen played responsibly to help their team get over the line. They reached 156 for 5 in 18.5 overs to complete an easy 5-wicket victory.
