Dempo sink Vasco in late onslaught; take 2nd slot

DULER: Dempo Sports Club wasted clear cut chances in the first half but buried Vasco Sports Club’s hopes of going home with a point after two second half strikers that saw them finishing 2-0 winners and wresting the second slot of the Goa Football Association (GFA) Professional League at Duler stadium on Wednesday.

Two second-half goals by Jessel Carneiro and substitute Beevan  D’Mello were enough for the winners to get back on the winning track.

Both teams started with limps of the past – Vasco SC having lost to Sporting Clube de Goa and Dempo SC having drawn goalless against Churchill Brothers.

Dempo coach Samir Naik gave a first start to defender Edwin Viegas in place of injured Olan Chandran while Vasco SC coach Micky Fernandes started with Shubham Malwankar, Anil Gaonkar, Inacio Colaco and Minesh Kunkolkar.

The first session did not rise to great heights. There were a few strikes at goal and Dempo SC were the main beneficiary. However, either the goalkeepers stood the test or the striker failed.  Dempo SC were the first to test Vasco goalkeeper Sanju Thapa when striker Joaquim Abranches fired a powerful shot from inside the box but the former astutely blocked the attempt.

At the other end, Vasco winger Anil tried to puzzle the Dempo defenders with some intricate footwork but failed to put power in his shot from inside as Dempo custodian Tyson Caiado made the collection look easy.

Dempo had the best chance to take the lead in the dying minutes of the first half when Kirtikesh Gadekar sent a neat free kick in the box but Edwin, Joaquim and Jaison let the ball go past them in front of the Vasco goal.

On crossing over, Dempo were the potent side as they came with two quick attacks but first Velto Cruz overhead kick off Abranches’s cross went over the crossbar, while Abranches another cross was headed out by Suraj Hadkonkar in the 74th minutes.

However, in the very next minutes, Jessel put the Golden Eagles into the lead as his powerful shot from outside the box gave no chance to Vasco keeper Thapa making it 1-0 for the Panjim based club. Dempo added another goal to their tally in the 83rd minutes when Abranches set up substitute Beevan with a super through pass where the striker made a clinical finish to put the Golden Eagles on the driver seat.

They had another chance to inflate their lead but Kirtikesh’s shot from close was bravely blocked by the Vasco goalkeeper Thapa.
