Date dress for dudes

It was St Valentine’s Day and your lady expects you to pamper her this weekend. You decide to take her out on a date and lavish her with gifts. Whether you have just started dating, or have been together for many years, dressing sharp for your date is the best way to show her that you respect and care about her.

Follow a few simple rules when preparing for a date and I’m sure you will be good to go.

Take time to prepare: Women spend a lot of time making sure they are presentable and well dressed for a date. The least you can do is return the favour. Right from the shower and grooming, to making sure your clothing is clean and in good order, your appearance for the date will surely earn you brownie points. Get a fresh shave if you have to or trim your beard if you have one. Maybe even a fresh haircut would do. Clip your nails. Getting your brows and any stray ear or nose hairs in check will refresh your entire face. Dressing sharp also puts you in the right frame of mind. Just like wearing a uniform, whether it is for sport or work, the clothing helps you focus on the task at hand.

Dress to enhance your best features: Women care about appearances. If you dress correctly, your clothing can enhance your positive features and boost your confidence. And women love a confident man. Clothing like a sports jacket can exaggerate masculine features such as square lines in the face, broad shoulders, muscular chest, smaller stomach compared to the upper torso.

Wear what makes you feel comfortable: What you wear should present your best and most authentic self. There is no point wearing something just in order to impress your date, and being uncomfortable throughout your time together. But having said that, do make an effort to dress up as dressing well sets the right tone and lets your date know that you are invested in their time.

Less is more: Keep you accessories to a minimum and go in for an effortless look. Too much won’t give off the same cool air of sophistication that a more minimal choice can. The same also goes for your cologne or aftershave. Wear your cologne or aftershave conservatively. A small stylish detail like a pocket square in your jacket breast pocket, a boutonniere on your lapel, or a quality watch on your arm can elevate your style in the eyes of a woman because it shows you pay attention to details. However, if something like a boutonniere isn’t true to your personality, skip it. You can use bright colours and patterns as an accent or an accessory such as a pocket square or a pair of patterned socks.

Dress right for the venue and the occasion: To avoid embarrassment to yourself and to your date, make sure you are dressed appropriately for the place. If you are hiking through a park for a picnic you’ll want a different style of clothing than you would want for an evening at a nice restaurant. Be considerate towards your date as well. A woman wearing high heels isn’t going to be happy about walking around in a wet park. For a casual date, especially an outdoor one, allow a relaxed outfit. However, stay away from clothes that make it seem like you didn’t put any effort into dressing such as work clothes or sweatpants. Dark washed jeans in black or indigo would be a good choice for a casual date when paired with anything from a short-sleeved collared shirt to a dress shirt and sports jacket. For dinner dates and other evening events in an urban setting, you should wear a jacket. For evenings or events that do not require a suit, opt for a blazer jacket, or a sport jacket in case of a casual event. A jacket has time and time again been shown to help men look more masculine and authoritative. If it gets too hot or if you find the situation is more casual than you expected, you can always discreetly take it off.

Pay attention to your shoes: No matter how informal your date is, whether you are wearing canvas sneakers or dress loafers, make sure your foot wear is clean, functional and stylish. You shoes say a lot about you and it is important to women that your shoes are in impeccable order.

If clothes maketh a man, your lady has an enticing date to look forward to. Until next time, stay stylish!
