Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao eased past Goa Velha Sports Club with a comfortable 2-0 win in the Goa Football Association (GFA) First Division League, at Duler stadium on Saturday.

Newton Azavedo opened the tally for Taleigao in the first session whilst Fanslam Correia scored in the dying minutes to confirm all three points.

Goa Velha started the match on an attacking note and attacked many times in the first 10 minutes but poor finishing in the final third restricted them from taking an early lead. In one of these forays, Francis Pawar found Jose Fernandes in the goalmouth with a neat cross but the forward failed to make the most of it.

The next 10 minutes saw Taleigao coming with a few raids as their striker Newton Azavedo tried to add pressure on Goa Velha’s defenders with swift attacks but he failed to find his target. Their midfielder Selveno Gonsalves also tried his luck from the distance but his goal bound strike was brilliantly fisted over the crossbar by Goa Velha keeper Soma Korgaonkar.

Despite Goa Velha being the dominant side for a  major part of the first session, it was Taleigao who broke the deadlock in the 34th minutes when Bhavesh Shirvaikar nicely set up Newton with a long pass who covered some ground and smartly chip the ball above onrushing Goa Velha keeper .

On crossing over, Goa Velha came close to equalising in the 53rd minute when Alme Fernandes went for  glory from inside the box off Francis’ well-taken corner but his powerful shot was brilliantly tipped by Taleigao custodian Savio Pereira.

Two minutes later, Irfan Yadwad was in commanding position to make it all square for Goa Velha but Taleigao keeper Savio came off his line to block the forward from scoring. The loose ball travelled to his teammate Francis but the midfielder saw his goal bound attempt blocked by Taleigao defender Pravin Bandokar at the cost of a corner.

Goa Velha had another opportunity to level the terms in the 71st minute when they were awarded a freekick just outside the box but Irfan’s powerful shot was divingly saved by Taleigao keeper Savio.

At the other end, Taleigao once again stunned the opponents as this time Fanslam Corriea clinically finished the ball in the net from close after getting a perfect pass from Newton, to make it 2-0 for Taleigao in the 81st minute.
