Congress suspects scam, seeks white paper on regularising Alvara land
Suspecting a scam, the Congress party on Tuesday demanded a white paper on the regularisation of land under Alvara which were gifted or rewarded by Portuguese rulers to hundreds of Goans in the year 1917.
“The BJP-led government has enacted Land Revenue Code Amendment Act 2017…this law facilitates the sale of such (Alvara) lands as well as their conversion and development for non-agricultural purposes. It opens doors for large-scale sale of such lands to non-Goans. It provides ample scope for corruption hence we demand that a white paper be issued,” said Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco while addressing a press conference in Panaji along with the party president Girish Chodankar.
He said that the government should come out with the details like the quantum of land under Alvara that can be regularised, the number of applications received and the money that the government has collected or will collect as the law permits transfer of such lands on payment of 10 per cent of the market price to the government.
Meanwhile, Girish Chodankar objected to the government’s move to take loan and pay interest to the companies that had purchased land in the proposed special economic zones in the state, which were scrapped later.
“A resolution was passed by the Board members of the Goa Industrial Development Corporation who have resolved to refund the amount paid by the SEZ parties along with interests…surprisingly this decision was taken by the Board in the absence of key members and it was in the Any Other Business of the board meeting,” he said.
