Company secretaries shine at regional conference

Goa as a destination for MICE events acquired an academic flavor with the regional conference of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) taking place at Arpora. The three-day conference concluded on November 5 and left in its wake robust approval for the profession of company secretaries and their role in the corporate world.

Over 250 company secretaries, several among them holding senior positions in organizations attended the conference to deliberate on ‘unveiling opportunities’ the theme of the conference. Delegates are expected to take up various issues such as scope of services under the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), insolvency and bankruptcy code (IBC), SEBI listing obligations and disclosure requirements (LODR), among others.

The establishment of NCLT offers various opportunities to company secretaries as they have been authorized to appear before the Tribunal. A whole new area of practice opens up for the profession with respect to advising on mergers, amalgamations, demergers, reverse mergers, compromise and other arrangements right from the conceptual to implementation level.

The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, was the chief guest at the event and in his speech, he emphasized on the role of company secretaries in nation building. Distinguished speakers at the conference includes, K Sethuraman, KS Ravichandran, Vineet Chaudhary among other.

Prakash Pandya, chairman, ICSI- WIRC, had valuable insights on future opportunities. He said that, the revised Company’s Act gives company secretaries sitting place besides the managing director at AGMs. He added that, the ICSI can help in resolving the problems of NPAs in the banking sector.

The ICSI is celebrating golden jubilee year this year and observed its 50th founder’s day on October 4. The Goa chapter of the ICSI is empowering as it is an all-women team with Shilpa Dhulapkar as the chairperson of the chapter.
