Collector allots parking slots for 15 taxis at Dabolim airport
South Goa district collector Dr Tariq Thomas has allotted slots for 15 yellow black taxi cabs at Dabolim airport, while the rest of the taxis have been provided alternate parking space at the slipway near the grade separator.
An inspection was fixed at Dabolim airport on Saturday afternoon by Dr Thomas in order to provide parking space for yellow black taxi cabs, those who are operating under United Taximen Union at Dabolim airport.
The Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha, superintendent of police South Arvind Gawas, deputy superintendent of police Vasco Sunita Sawant, airport director Bhupesh Negi, Dabolim airport PI Shailesh Narvekar, police sub-inspector Razashad Sheikh attached to Dabolim airport traffic cell, UTU president Mahesh Petkar and others were present at the inspection.
Speaking to this daily, Dr Thomas said, “Basically we are trying to identify alternate location for parking for the yellow black taxi cabs at least from the airport in order to reduce congestion. We have surveyed the site and have put forth the proposal before the taxi owners. Let us see how the proposal works in the coming week.”
He disclosed that 15 taxis have been allocated slots at Dabolim airport and the rest of the taxis have been given alternate space at the slipway close to the grade separator near INS Hansa gate. He however has given directions to move the yellow black taxis from the exit gate where they park their vehicles at present, causing inconvenience to passengers and other vehicles which move from the airport.
“We request the taxi operators to shift to the alternate parking slot which is being identified and surveyed on Saturday. They can park their taxis at the parking slots and move as and when the taxis are required for the passengers at the airport. We have to ensure that everybody’s interest is protected”, informed Dr Thomas.
UTU president Petkar said that the UTU members are unsatisfied with the parking arrangements made by the district collector on Saturday. “We have decided to have an emergency meeting on Sunday at Dabolim airport, wherein we will decide the future course of action”, said Petkar. He however alleged that Airports Authority of India is harassing UTU members at Dabolim airport over parking issue from time to time.
