Babush panel sweeps Taleigao panchayat polls
Panaji: The Taleigao Progressive Development Front, the panel floated by Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate and her husband, former minister and Taleigao strongman Atanasio Monserrate alias Babush, Monday swept the Taleigao panchayat polls winning all the eleven seats.
Babush, his wife and their well-wishers celebrated the victory of the panel with a procession taken out amid slogans and bursting of firecrackers.
This is the third time that the Babush panel has swept the village panchayat polls.
Mamlatdar of Tiswadi and Returning Officer Franklin Ferrao told reporters that the ballot boxes were taken up for counting at 8 am and the counting ended around 10 am. The process went off peacefully and nobody ordered recounting of the votes even though around 274 invalid votes were reported in all wards, he said.
The panchayat poll was held on Sunday to elect ten of the 11 members of the grassroots self-governing body. One member was already elected unopposed after his was the only nomination filed for the ward. Though no other panel was in the electoral fray, individual candidates opposing the Taleigao MLA were contesting in ten wards.
Ferrao complimented police inspector Sudesh Naik for the service rendered during the polling exercise on Sunday and counting on Monday and for deploying policemen and women police to control crowd and traffic at the counting centre at Bal Bhavan.
Jubilations and slogans in support of Babush were witnessed as and when the results of the wards were declared at the counting centre.
“We are a team and we all work in one direction. Our one goal is to win the Panaji seat. I thank the people of Taleigao for reposing their faith in us. I did not visit the people; in fact only Jennifer campaigned and all voted us to power due to her hard work and dedication,” Babush said speaking to media.
Stating that he always takes all elections seriously, Babush said that the roads in Panaji are bad. He said that the existing slums in Camara Bhat will be his priority and added that he would take up the issue with CCP.
It may be noted that Babush is the Congress party candidate for the Panaji bypoll, scheduled to be held on May 19.
Stating that he feels sorry for Utpal Parrikar, who has been denied a ticket by BJP for the Panaji bypoll, Babush said that the BJP has forgotten the dedication of former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar towards the party.
