Alert security guard foils ATM robbery bid in city
PANAJI: An alert security guard foiled a robbery attempt by two unknown accused persons at the ATM booth of Bank of Maharashtra located opposite the Government Printing Press in Panaji in the early hours of Friday.
The incident left the security guard with head injuries after he was attacked multiple times with a hammer by one of the accused.
The incident was recorded on the CCTV camera of the ATM booth and the footage shows the security guard trying to catch hold of a masked man, who in an attempt to flee is seen assaulting the security guard with a hammer. However, the security guard manages to remove the mask of the unidentified accused person.
The accused later fled from the scene along with another accused, who was waiting outside the ATM booth on a two-wheeler, police said referring to the statement of the security guard. Police are on the lookout for the accused persons.
Incidentally the place of incident is located a few metres away from the police headquarters and the Panaji police station.
A complaint in this regard has been lodged by the security guard Ranu Singh (27). Singh resides at Mala Fontainhas in the city and is a native of Madhya Pradesh. Based on the complaint, Panaji police on Saturday registered an FIR against two unknown accused persons under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment).
Singh is working with a private security agency and was deployed at the ATM booth of the Bank of Maharashtra, police said. The time of incident recorded on the CCTV footage is between 1 am to 1.30 am (Friday) police said.
Referring to the complaint, police said that the accused persons, with their common intention, assaulted the complainant (security guard) with a hammer to kill him while attempting to commit robbery of cash from the ATM machine of the bank.
