2 tenants rob Guirdolim elderly couple at knifepoint, held

MARGAO: In a chilling robbery case, two tenants brandishing knives confined a senior citizen couple in a room of a house at Guirdolim-Chandor in the wee hours of Sunday and robbed cash, gold and electronic items worth Rs 8 lakh.

The senior citizen couple identified as Joaquim Estebeiro and Maria Estebeiro has sustained knife injuries to their hands and has been admitted to Margao Hospicio Hospital.  The house is located in an isolated area with only one other house nearby.

Meanwhile, the two accused were late night arrested by the police. While one accused was arrested from Porvorim, the other was arrested from Betim.

South Goa Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas, who is supervising the investigation of the case, said that one of the accused Anwar Shaik after committing the robbery reached Margao and then to Porvorim. Police, who suspected Anwar’s involvement, arrested him from Porvorim.

Gawas said that the second accused Sarfaraz Adam was later arrested from Betim and the duo interrogated at Margao. Police also said that most of the stolen items including gold, cash and electronic items have been recovered from the accused.

The two will be produced before a court on Monday for remand, Gawas said.

Maina-Curtorim police have registered the case under sections 394, 457 and 341 read with 34 of IPC.

Police said that Maria noticed the duo approaching her and suspecting something fishy raised an alarm when her husband rushed to her however the two persons who were armed with knives restrained them and after threatening them at knifepoint took them in a room and confined them. They closed the room from the outside after taking the keys of cupboard from the couple.

According to sources in police, the two opened the cupboard with the keys and took away gold ornaments and cash of Rs 50,000 and fled. According to sources in police, the couple raised an alarm after the duo left and locals rushed to the site and rescued the couple.

Police also informed that after receiving information, a team was sent to the spot and panchanama was conducted. Police also pressed into service dog squad and finger print expert.

Police said that the couple has been admitted in Margao Hospicio Hospital and their statements have been recorded.
